PMI

Positive material identification — on-the-spot alloy verification against the marking and certificate.

Mixed grades are the most dangerous error in an alloy package, because a 4340 part and a 15CDV6 part look identical. PMI by X-ray fluorescence or optical emission checks the actual chemistry of the finished item; on titanium, nickel and high tensile work it is done on 100% of pieces rather than on a sample.
